200 years ago, the mayor of Bruck Georg Frey named his newly
built public house near the stone bridge on the river Regnitz
»Zum Ritter St. Georg«. This name was taken over in 1802 for
the now historically listed guesthouse, and is still carried
on today.
People today experience the two-storey rectangular building with
its hip roof - once house number 109 in the village of Bruck and
now Herzogenauracher Damm 11 - just as the guests did 200 years
ago. The prominent location made it a place to stop for travellers,
farmers, soldiers, and the locals, including the young sport
enthusiasts who founded the "Turnverein Markt Bruck"
(Gymnastics Club Markt Bruck), later called "TV 61", on August 13,
1861. It was also used as a toll collection point and even as
a tobacco factory from 1840-1890.
On April 1, 1891, the 31-year-old Johann Leonhard Birnbaum
of Rosstal, on record as a proprietor and economist, took possession
of the building. He was the seventh owner after the builder
Georg Frey.
The family gastronomy business is in its fourth generation with
Hans Birnbaum. He and his wife Katrin, a hotel management specialist,
have run »Ritter St. Georg« since 1995.
In 1997 the inside of the building was thoroughly modernized and
it was expanded with a large, modern extension.
